Faults represent a key role in the reservoir exploitation plan, their properties (leakage/sealing) is crucial for every well placement decision or in life cycle of the production field.

Fault interpretation remains a crucial step to minimize risk in any well placement. Thanks to the advances in seismic acquisition, it becomes now possible to image faults and fractures.

Faults are automatically extracted from a seismic volume through an optimized computation, where the user keeps control of the volume inputs during every step of the workflow. This innovative method is based on the variance values in elongated windows at numerous dips and azimuths. The Fault Plane corresponds to the maximum variance average for a certain direction (dip & azimuth) and yields coherent structures of natural faults.

Thanks to interactive and intuitive tools such as dip/azimuth filtering and Fault Merge Assistant, interpreters are now able to handle dense and complex fault networks.

By inserting fault planes to the geologic time model, fault throw distribution can be mapped on each plane, which helps in the understanding of sealing and geomechanical properties.
