Northern Lights Joint Venture Selects Eliis for Advanced Geological Analysis in CCS Project

Montpellier, France, April 23, 2024 - Northern Lights JV (NL JV), a joint venture between TotalEnergies, Shell, and Equinor, has selected Eliis, a leading provider of advanced seismic interpretation solutions, to support the evaluation of their newly acquired 4D seismic baseline data - with particular focus on data quality assessment within the current NL JV storage complex (Aurora).

Northern Lights JV aims to contribute to establishing a comprehensive CCS value chain in Norway, providing services for the safe and reliable transport and storage of CO2 emissions from industrial sources across Europe. Scheduled to be ready to receive CO2 in 2024, the project represents a significant step towards reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change.

Eliis's cutting-edge AI-assisted seismic interpretation platform, PaleoScan™, serves as the ideal tool to rapidly and efficiently evaluate the geological elements of CO2 storage, as well as identify potential geological risks. By leveraging PaleoScan's innovative solutions and proven successes in subsurface investigations, Northern Lights JV can conduct a thorough analysis of the structural and sedimentary features essential for the characterization of safe CO2 storage in a time-effective and consistent manner.

"We are delighted to support Northern Lights on this pivotal CCS initiative." said Benoit Matha, CEO of Eliis. "As a company, Eliis believes in the potential of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a key contributor to the decarbonisation of industries. We have established technological support for energy transition solutions through the development and supply of our integrated seismic interpretation software, PaleoScan™, a fundamental pillar of our company mission."

Based on the new seismic dataset, the PaleoScan workflow rapidly delivered a comprehensive set of horizons within the storage interval. This indicates that PaleoScan can be the ideal tool for quick assessment of other potential storage areas, offering a detailed view of the subsurface structure to assess seal integrity and identify potential geological leak paths. This in-depth understanding of the storage unit improved subsequent workflows, enhancing the existing geological model and 3D analysis of key features.

“Our technology enables rapid, detailed analysis of storage reservoirs, providing valuable insight into the geological characteristics required for input into de-risking carbon storage sites." noted Francois Lafferriere, Chief Operating Officer at Eliis. "Integrating PaleoScan’s AI-assisted structural interpretation workflow ensures thorough detail in the assessment process, offering a comprehensive fault interpretation of the storage interval."

“With the work from Eliis’ team and their results we are able to quickly identify geological features and faults as input to broader subsurface evaluations.” said Henrik Ohrt, Subsurface Manager at Northern Lights JV. “As a low margin business, our Subsurface team must be innovative and proactive in carrying out evaluations in a time- and cost-efficient manner.”

By harnessing advanced technologies and expertise, Northern Lights aims to pave the way for a more sustainable future, demonstrating CCS as a viable solution for reducing carbon emissions. The application of PaleoScan underscores the effectiveness of leveraging established subsurface software solutions, traditionally developed for conventional resource exploration, in contributing significantly to new energy initiatives such as carbon storage.

About Northern Lights

Northern Lights is developing the world’s first cross-border CO2 transport and storage infrastructure. Delivering CO2 transport and storage as a service, Northern Lights enables mitigation of industrial emissions that cannot be avoided and accelerates the decarbonisation of European industry.

Drawing on experience from nearly 30 years of CO2 storage on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, Northern Lights are at the forefront of developing CCS technologies. The company will transport liquefied CO2 from capture sites to an onshore receiving terminal in western Norway, before transporting it by pipeline for permanent storage in a reservoir 2,600 metres under the seabed.

On schedule to be ready to receive CO2 in 2024, Northern Lights offers safe and reliable CO2 transport and storage services to industrial emitters in Norway and across Europe. Northern Lights JV DA is a registered, incorporated General Partnership with Shared Liability (DA) owned by Equinor, TotalEnergies and Shell. More information on Northern Lights JV at norlights.com
